Emma Johnson: Rihanna for River Island, Timberlake and Tom Ford... fashion faces the music

FASHION went pop this week with details on a couple of huge singer-designer collaborations. First up, on Monday, Rihanna gave us a sneak peek at the looks from her eagerly awaited first fashion range.

I say glimpse and it really was. In a black and white video first broadcast on Vogue.com the singer took viewers on a tour of her design studio where she and co-designer Adam Selman have been putting the finishing touches to a collection for River Island.

We never quite saw a full outfit but there were glimpses of sketches and model fittings and plenty of shots of Rihanna looking cool.

“I have wanted to design my own fashion label for a very long time,” Rihanna says in the video. “This has been something I wanted to do ever since I started loving fashion. Every time I saw something on a rack there was something I wanted to do to change it and so I thought that the only way I could do that is by designing the perfect thing for me.”

We will have to wait until London Fashion Week to see the actual pieces in the range and it won’t hit stores until March but we can expect everything from swimwear to T-shirts, dresses to jumpsuits apparently.

I can completely understand River Island’s eagerness to hook up with the S&M singer. She is the hottest girl in the world at the moment.

She is also a style icon.

But, as her Twitter account reveals, these days the 24-year-old is having trouble keeping her kit on.

I have seen so many near-naked shots of the Bajan bombshell in recent months – bottomless at Christmas, virtually topless on her album cover – I could plot her tattoos for you.

Nevertheless this gear is going to shift. I predict the bun fights witnessed at H&M for the likes of Jimmy Choo and Stella McCartney’s diffusion lines will be nothing compared to the Rihanna rumbles.

From one superstar to another, Tuesday brought the news that Justin Timberlake has worked with Texan design god Tom Ford to create the image for his new single.

Following his break to make movies and get married, the 31-year-old ex-Mouseketeer is taking on the charts again and Ford is helping him bring sexy back it seems.

His new track (a collaboration with Jay-Z) is appropriately entitled Suit & Tie and the video features old Trousersnake looking dapper in a range of bespoke suits and accessories which Ford and Justin designed together.

The cover of the single meanwhile has Timberlake in a Tom Ford suit and bow tie – naturally.

In March Timberlake’s new album – his third – drops and according to Vogue the fashion pieces “will be a focal point of The 20/20 Experience”.

Ford says of Justin: “He has innate style and enormous talent. It has been such a pleasure and honour to work with him throughout this entire creative process.”

It is not the first time Tom Ford and Justin Timberlake have collaborated on clothing. Ford designed the tuxedo and loafers worn by the pop idol for his marriage to Jessica Biel.

On the strength of the picture above alone, I think it’s safe to say Tom and Justin are well and truly N Sync.
