LIVERPOOL architecture practice Buttress Fuller Alsop Williams has been honoured for its restoration work on a Yorkshire cathedral.
The firm won the Leeds Architecture Restored Building Award for its work restoring and reworking the interior of the city’s Cathedral Church of Saint Anne.
The judging panel described the refurbishment of the Grade II* listed Catholic cathedral as: “A very high quality and sensitive restoration of this exceptional building revealing and displaying dramatic spaces and beautiful materials with detailing of the highest quality.”
Director Richard Williams said: “This building was a pleasure to work on. It is always a delight to bring spaces back to life by enhancing original features and sensitive re-ordering.
“Many of the elements were designed by using just stone and oak, the same materials used in the construction of the cathedral in 1904.
“We were careful to add new aspects of the design to interpret the style in a contemporary manner but without overwhelming the original fabric.”
