China in £125m investment pledge

THE North West will regain its position as Europe’s leading textiles centre following a £125m investment pledge by China.

Chinagateway in Wigan will cover 1m sq ft and include manufacturing, distribution, conference facilities and an international hotel.

It will home to many Chinese companies in an area that was the cradle of the textile industry revolution in the 19th century. News of the deal comes just days after Prime Minister Gordon Brown expressed a wish for the UK to be the main location for Chinese overseas investment.

It is expected to create at least 1,000 jobs.
