Takeover deal helps plant wholesaler move into retailing

A LEADING UK producer of hanging baskets and bedding plants has acquired a retail plant nursery in Southport.

Ornamental Plants, which is itself based in Tarleton, just a few minutes from the seaside town, has bought Sooty’s Plants for an undisclosed sum, in a deal supported by NatWest.

The purchase of the five-acre nursery represents Ornamental’s first move into the retail market. Previously, the company has specialised in the wholesale of plants and hanging baskets.

Ornamental Plants was established in 1993 and operates from an 18 acre site in Tarleton. The company supplies more than 700,000 hanging baskets a year to a national DIY, furnishing and garden chain.

The purchase of a retail site provides the firm with the opportunity to sell directly to the public and maximise the value of its surplus wholesale stock.
