Halewood may build baby Land Rover

LAND Rover refused to comment on fresh speculation that a new model could be built at its Halewood plant.

As revealed in the Daily Post in December, the company has produced a concept version of a new “baby Land Rover”, known as the LRX, and is likely to build it at Halewood where it already builds the successful Freelander 2.

Indian group Tata Motors confirmed this week that it was to buy Land Rover and Jaguar in a £1bn deal. Analysts at online publication just-auto.com have again suggested that Tata will now “rubber stamp” a Land Rover plan to build two variants of the LRX at Halewood and double output at the plant by 2012. It suggests that one of the new models will be a seven-seat version of the LRX.

The vehicle has already been dubbed “the world’s greenest 4x4” and is designed to be more fuel-efficient than existing models.
