Phone giant takes on ¼m new contracts

MOBILE phone giant O2 added 206,385 contract customers in the first quarter of 2008, more than 2½ times the figure for the same period last year.

The company’s total mobile contract base is now 18.4m.

O2, which employs more than 1,700 people at its call centre near Runcorn, said the increase in contract customers was driven by iPhone and strong “traditional handset” connections.

Ronan Dunne, chief executive of O2 UK, said: “The UK mobile phone market has matured to the point where almost everyone owns a mobile phone.

“Retaining customers and providing a high quality service are crucial.

“An ever-increasingly important role is therefore being played by our North West based customer services team.”

O2’s Preston Brook centre is the second largest private sector employer in the Halton area.
