BUSINESSES in St Helens are celebrating victory after a four-year battle to have an ATM machine installed in the cultural quarter of the town centre.
The George Street Traders Association, a forum made up of around 60 local businesses, first raised the issue with St Helens Chamber in 2004, as they were concerned that the night-time economy around the George Street Quarter was suffering due to a lack of cash withdrawal facilities in the area.
In partnership with other agencies, St Helens Chamber initially approached a major high street banking organisation, which identified a site, agreed to install an ATM, but backed out at the 11th hour and decided to locate the machine elsewhere following a change in corporate strategy.
Undeterred, St Helens Chamber continued to campaign on behalf of local traders, lobbying banks and presenting their case for the much needed facility.
The breakthrough came with a promise from Alliance and Leicester to look into the feasibility of installing a cash machine in the area and, after a number of negotiations, the location for the cash point was approved.
