Hopes for big Airbus orders at 60th show

AEROSPACE workers on Deeside will be hoping for a confidence boost at the Farnborough Air Show being staged next week.

The biennial show celebrates its 60th anniversary this year, but is being held against a backdrop of soaring fuel costs and climate change.

During the past few months, numerous airlines have made cutbacks.

Several airlines, including the Isle of Man-based regional airline Euromanx and business-only carrier Silverjet, have gone out of business. But Airbus – which builds the wings for all its jets at its Broughton complex, near Chester – is expected to unveil some big orders.

Orders and pledges worth more than £15bn were announced at the opening of last year’s Paris Air Show.

Analysts believe the same level of business will not be repeated at Farnborough, but there are hopes of big orders.
