THE sweet smell of success is coming from a 168 year-old Southport bakery which has secured £500,000 to support its growing order book.
Mellors bakes and supplies traditional and modern confectionery products for retail and trade customers.
Its craft bakers supply several national supermarket chains and the increase in its working capital facility, from RBS Invoice Finance, will enable it to meet the rise in demand for its products.
The bakery’s turnover has risen to £3.4m since it was bought by husband and wife team Chris and Dawn McLintic in 2004. This has been helped by a move to a new manufacturing facility in Marshside, Southport.
Chris Mclintic said: “The business has performed well during the last few years as we have continued to grow and secure more orders.
“As we take on more work, it’s essential to have the necessary funding structure in place to cover the cost of our overheads. This facility is a good solution and will support our future growth plans.”
Mellors was founded in 1840 by Amelia Jane Mellor, many of whose recipes are still being used.
It specialises in a range of sticky buns such as Victoria crowns, iced fingers, Eccles cakes and gingerbread men.
