Leahy tells how to survive economic downturn
TESCO boss Sir Terry Leahy told a Liverpool business audience yesterday that staying close to customers is key to surviving the current difficult economic conditions.
Sir Terry was addressing about 400 business leaders from around the region who had gathered at Liverpool’s BT Convention Centre for the last day of the Liverpool Summit.
During his lunchtime speech, Sir Terry described how Tesco had responded to numerous challenges in previous years and would do so again to cope with the current economic downturn.
The supermarket group’s chief executive said: “We are no strangers to this type of climate. We turned the business round in the early ‘90s in a much deeper recession.
“We learned some lessons from then and the message is simple – stay with your customers. Listen to your customers.”
The Liverpool-born Tesco chief’s speech was the highlight of the two-day conference.
