Alsop High School £21m revamp approved

New look for Alsop High School

A £21m plan to rebuild a Liverpool school has been approved by councillors.

Alsop High in Walton, which has about 1,700 pupils, was recently rated outstanding by Ofsted but its buildings, some dating back to 1926, are no longer up to scratch.

The refurbishment, expected to begin next month, will create a new three-storey building and include flexible classrooms with retractable walls, a new canteen and a dance studio.

The present landmark building will also be extensively refurbished to improve science and maths facilities.

The plans were given the go ahead by Liverpool City Council’s executive board yesterday.

Work will be done in sections, so lessons can continue in parts of the school untouched by builders.

At the moment, the majority of students are taught in 36 temporary classrooms scattered around the school grounds.

The Alsop project will be the first in the city carried out under the £400m Building Schools For The Future (BSF) programme, which will eventually rebuild or refurbish 30 Liverpool secondaries.

Cllr Keith Turner, executive member for education, said: “This signifies the start of a new dawn for education in the city.”
