CHILDREN from across Wirral were treated to readings from two of Merseyside’s leading writers, Frank Cottrell Boyce and Levi Tafari.
The event at Wallasey Town Hall was to celebrate the National Year of Reading and locals of all ages were invited to the event.
Sue Powell, head of Wirral libraries said: “The National Year of Reading has brought together many novel initiatives to promote reading.
“The aim of this day is to celebrate them in all their forms and to look at the impact of some of the innovative events on people’s lives.
“We aim to achieve better outcomes for local people through reading, family and community engagement and prove that reading really does connect.”
Seven million people across England struggle with basic numeracy and literacy skills.
For them, everyday tasks are fraught with difficulties – reading is the key that opens the door to successful education and employment, independent living and community prosperity.
Adrian Jones, mayor of Wirral, has made reading one of the themes of his year in office.
He said: “Nothing can be more educationally important than literacy; it is central to all other intellectual development.”
