A CELEBRATION event for young people who took part in the Year of Reading was held at Liverpool’s Central Library.
During 2008, tens of thousands of children and adults in the city took part in activities organised in schools, libraries and in conjunction with Liverpool and Everton Football Clubs.
It was part of a national campaign to encourage residents to develop a love of literature.
The wide range of events included appearances by top writers including Anthony Horowitz, and a visit from boxer Evander Holyfield who urged children to take up reading.
Prizes were awarded to young people who took part in a creative writing competition about what happened to La Princesse – the 50ft mechanical spider – when she disappeared into the Mersey Tunnel, following her appearance at the Capital of Culture celebrations.
The assistant to the leader of the city council, Cllr Tina Gould, said: “A love of books and reading is something which lasts for life and is best developed when young.
“It is vitally important that we do all we can to encourage every one of our residents – both young and old – to read.
“It is not only crucial to education, but also helps in becoming a well-rounded person and with the well-being of people.”
