Extra places for trainee teachers at Ormskirk's Edge Hill University

A UNIVERSITY will create nearly 100 extra teacher training places after winning £800,000 of government funding.

Edge Hill university, based in Ormskirk, is to swell its Initial Teacher Training programme by 92 places.

It follows the university securing £800,000 from the Training and Development Agency for Schools (TDA) in recognition of its excellence in the field.

Edge Hill, awarded university status in 2006, has been a centre for teacher training since 1885, and is the second largest provider of teacher training in the country.

It is also the largest provider of training for secondary school teachers.

Its funding award came amid a high success rate of producing the teachers of tomorrow, with nearly 90% of students working in teaching the year after they finished the course.

Last night, Steve Igoe, Edge Hill’s pro-vice chancellor (resources), told the Daily Post: “Despite a challenging economic environment which has seen most providers suffer reductions in commissions and funding, we are delighted the TDA has acknowledged the quality and relevance of our programmes.

“The additional funds will support our work in training and developing not just primary and secondary school teachers, but the whole school workforce.”

Its Initial Teacher Training programme spans the age ranges and was voted the best in the North West by final-year students in the 2008 National Student Survey.
