Cllr Davies said that no sites had yet been established – this will be investigated at a later date – but the plan is to locate them with mainstream schools, so children can benefit from the interaction with other pupils.
Peter Edmondson, of the Children and Young People’s Department, said: “Some children will be spending all their time in the special schools, but others will be able to spend time in the mainstream school if it’s right for them.”
He said the department was in the early stages of the plan, but added: “We have got to look ahead over the horizon and make sure that our facilities are ready for the future.”
The majority of funding is likely to be made available through the monies allocated to Wirral via the “Building Schools for the Future” initiative and the Learning and Skills Council.
Cllr Davies said: “It is not about reducing the overall number of places.”
