Freshfield Primary School pupils
A MERSEYSIDE school is to become among the most energy- efficient in the land, as part of a £250,000 pilot scheme.
Formby’s Freshfield primary school is to act as a test for Sefton council as part of a push to make schools across the country greener.
The council has secured the funding from the Department of Children, Schools and Families which is eager for UK schools to reduce its carbon emissions.
Freshfield had been identified by the local authority as in need of a makeover with a number of major elements within the building, including the roof and heating systems needing an upgrade.
And, with the 254-pupil school pushing towards an Eco School Green Flag Award for its commitment to the environment, the council has decided it was an ideal school to pilot a borough-wide bid to be more energy efficient.
The school – of similar size and structure to many others in Sefton – will install a host of green measures over the next 12 months.
The school’s environmentally-friendly makeover will include double glazed windows, kitting the roof with the most up-to-date insulation and installing special wall panels which are designed to keep heat loss to a minimum. It will also get energy-efficient light bulbs and taps designed to stop water wastage, and the ability to heat only those parts of the school being utilised.
