Campaigners express delight – but unions put Champagne on ice

UNION leaders last night welcomed the news that department closures “seem to have been averted”.

But Roger Brooks, president of the Liverpool University branch of the University and College Union said he was concerned local projects would lose out if only internationally recognised research was funded.

And he said regular inspections meant “we are in danger that people will be so busy doing reports they don’t have time for research.”

But a delighted Paul Athans, spokesman for student-led Save Our Subjects campaign, thanked protestors and said: “This is a clear victory for us.”

The university, though, insists the public outcry played no part in its decision.
