Liverpool Community College lecturers to strike during exams

But the sticking point appears to be working hours, with the union unhappy the college expects new lecturers to work 28 hours a week, the UCU want it set at 26 hours, save for “exceptional circumstances.”

Pickets will gather outside the college tomorrow morning culminating in a rally outside its arts centre in Myrtle Street at 11am.

Last night the college said it was “disappointed” at the action - particular as it coincides with exam season.

However the spokesman stressed the college would be open as normal tomorrow.

A spokesman added: “The new contract gives the college greater flexibility to meet the challenges in a changing business environment.

“Liverpool Community College values its workforce and continues to offer some of the most generous conditions in the further education sector.”

The spokesman added: “Annual teaching hours will not be increased and teachers will still receive 12 weeks holiday a year along with other benefits such as a pension scheme.

“We have also agreed with UCU to review the £29,000 salary cap in three year’s time.

“This is before any new members reach that point on the pay scale.”
