Wallasey school adds circus performing to the curriculum
MOST children find it hard enough juggling their homework.
But pupils at a Wirral school are now juggling for real after circus performing was added to the curriculum.
The daring lessons were introduced at Mount primary school, in Wallasey, after staff fell in love with the circus idea during a lively team-bonding session.
In a bid to enrich lessons, plate spinning and juggling now feature alongside maths and English on the Mount Pleasant Road school’s timetable.
But the school is not finished yet.
Teachers were so impressed with the way children have mastered all things circus they intend to step up lessons and let children get to grips with more acts.
Although fire-eating, tightrope- walking and knife-throwing have been ruled out, stilt-walking will soon be added to the hour-long lessons taken by pupils every Friday.
Karen Grant, a Key Stage Two teacher at the school, said children had staff to thank for the exciting addition to the curriculum.
She said: “It started with the staff having a go and working with a circus performer during an team bonding day last September.
“It took place in the school hall. The idea was team building, learning new skills and we all had a go – including the head teacher – at things like juggling.
“We really enjoyed it and thought the children could get something out of it.”
