A SCHOOL move towards making girls wear trousers sparked a pupil protest.
Around 100 students walked out of Chester’s Upton-By-Chester High School and ran amok on the playing fields.
School bosses plan to introduce the trousers as part of the uniform from September because they say the girls are wearing too short skirts.
But the policy prompted a furious response from the students at the St James Avenue school.
They organised Wednesday’s protest through social networking site Facebook, in response to a letter headteacher Jane Holland sent to parents telling them of the intended alteration to the school dress code, which follows the introduction of a new summer shirt.
The morning demonstration was intended to be peaceful but ended up with the protesters running around the school field and refusing to return to class.
One student said: “We were protesting about the girls not being able to wear make-up and maybe having to wear trousers.”
But Ms Holland is sticking to her trousers threat unless hemlines start to drop.
