Liverpool academy sponsors sitting on their cash

Four-year-old Academy of St Francis of Assisi, in Kensington, had only received £1.187m of the £2m pledged by the Diocese and Archdiocese of Liverpool.

Last night, a Liverpool Diocese spokesman said it had now paid the £1.4m it pledged.

A Liverpool Archdiocese spokesman confirmed it was responsible for the “outstanding contribution” which, as agreed by the DCSF, will be paid “as soon as circumstances permit.”

The Government has stressed the sponsorship was never meant to be paid “up front”.

But John Rimmer, Merseyside executive member for teaching union, the NASUWT, is appalled that sponsors can sit on their money.

“It should be paid up front and only then should sponsors be having any say in the school.”
