Initial government backing for Runcorn academy

PLANS to create a business-backed super school in Halton have won initial government backing.
Schools Secretary Ed Balls yesterday signed off an “expression of interest”, meaning council and school officials can now proceed and draw up more detailed plans for an 11-19 academy, replacing Halton High School in Runcorn.
Specialising in English, the academy will be sponsored by the Ormiston Trust and co-sponsored by the University of Chester.
It is expected to be built at Wharford Farm, Runcorn, as part of Halton council’s £100m Building Schools for the Future education programme.
Academies are managed and partly sponsored by businesses, charities and other organisations who are permitted to have a say in its future curriculum.
