Merseyside schools receive government boost in bid to become charities

THE Government last night gave the green light for five schools in the region to develop plans to become charities.

Schools Secretary Ed Balls lent his support for Neston Primary, fellow Neston primaries: Parkgate and Woodfall; Prenton High School for Girls, Birkenhead and The Whitby High School, Ellesmere Port, to go ahead and draw up detailed proposals to become trust schools. Although they will still receive the same local education authority funding and remain as schools in their own right, if approved they will form a charitable trust board, including representatives from the business community.

To win approval, schools must explain how their charitable boards would benefit pupils and the wider community.
