MERSEYSIDE schools defied the ongoing bad weather to ensure thousands of pupils could begin their A-Levels as planned.

And today the majority of schools in the region were expected to open as normal with staff and caretakers joining forces to ensure their sites were finally deemed safe.

However, parents are urged to check with their schools and local authority information before setting off today.

After days of closures, the lion’s share of schools were up and running yesterday with a special effort made to ensure a week of A-Level exams began on time.

One Wirral school was so determined exam season would go without a hitch it set up a dedicated A-Level group on social networking site Facebook.

Students at The Oldershaw, Wallasey, were able to get extra revision tips and relevant texts on the website.

They were also reminded that the school was open to sixth formers on Thursday and Friday for last-minute refresher lessons, ahead of the A-Levels which started yesterday.

Head teacher Steven Peach said: “Kids are used to using Facebook, so we thought it was a good way to keep everyone informed. We opened to sixth formers on Thursday and both sixth formers and Year 11 students on Friday. On Monday we were open as normal and attendance was around 85%which we’re pleased with.”
