And Mrs Van de Waal said, as well as broadening pupils’ horizons, working with outside bodies “is a learning experience for teachers”.
She said: “I would welcome any extra funding to do something after school and increase resources for children.
“After-school clubs increase the pupils’ confidence and when children can do things that recognise their own interests it can be the starting point of something so much bigger.”
She added: “Professionals coming in can be great role models. ”
Hilary Emery, executive director of development and improvement at the TDA said:“Schools offering extended services are reaping the benefits, with many headteachers reporting pupils having increased motivation, better behaviour, improved attendance and higher levels of overall attainment.”
Cllr Phil Davies, Wirral council's cabinet member for children’s services said: “After-school clubs are widely used across Wirral and this funding will offer more opportunities to pupils, particular those whose parents may not be able to pay for such activities.”
