A THOUSAND students were today expected to take part in a wildcat city centre protest against a rise in tuition fees – despite failing to inform police of their plans.
Last Wednesday, around 3,000 students took part in a mainly peaceful protest march to Liverpool Town Hall organised via social networking site Facebook after a rallying call from a national network of students called The National Campaign Against Fees and Cuts.
Around 1,000 students , many from school sixth forms, have again responded to a Facebook invitation to join another national day of protests against the fee rises and higher education cuts.
The noon starting point is again listed as Liverpool Guild of Students in Mount Pleasant, which, at the finale of last week’s demonstration, was stormed by around 500 students, including several dozen who got on the roof. Last night, Merseyside police said they had made “appropriate” plans and were aware of the protest. But, unlike last week’s event, they said organisers had failed to make contact to discuss plans and any intended routes.
