Merseyside schools share record GCSE performances (GALLERY)


MERSEYSIDE schools again consigned previous records to history.

At record breaking Liverpool College in Mossley Hill, headed by principal Hans Broekman (pictured) 94.7% of students got five A*-C in any subject compared to 94.5% in 2010; while its five A* to C pass rate including English and maths also rose, from 85.7% to 90%.

Just under half of all grades, 45%, were A or A*.

At Liverpool’s only grammar school, the Blue Coat, 100% of pupils earned five A* to C including English and maths - for the fifth year in a row.

And 78.5% of all grades were A*/A and 40.8 % were A* The school also revealed 45 students gained 12 A* and A grades with nine students attaining 12 A* grades.

At Wirral Grammar School for girls 99% of pupils gained at least five A*-C grades including English and mathematics and 100% gained at least five A* to C grades – the same as in 2010.

And 33 out of their 152 pupils gained 10 A*/A grades.

Headteacher Elaine Cogan put the high success rate down to the student’s self-motivation and drive, the school’s ambitious targets and the hard work of staff.

Wirral Grammar School for Boys also had reason to cheer with 98% of students gaining five or more A*-C grades, including Maths, English and sciences, up slightly from 95% in 2010.

In addition, 54% of grades achieved were A* and A.

Headmaster, David Hazeldine, said: “The outstanding team effort of staff, pupils and parents has produced an outstanding set of GCSE results this year.”

St Anselm’s College in Birkenhead also managed a best ever showing with 98% of students gaining five or more A*-C grades including English and maths – up 4% on last year, while 41% of all entries were graded at A* or A.

Both the boys and girls at Merchant Taylors’ in Crosby also posted record results.

Provisional results show 40% of girls managed an A* and 31.4% of male pupils managed an A*.

The average number of A*-C grades per student at Calday Grange Grammar School, West Kirby was 10.3. and 98% attained five or more A*-C grades including English and Maths.
