STUDENTS in Halton are celebrating their best ever GCSE results, with pupils excelling in all subjects.
The number of students getting five or more A* to C grades has risen by 9%; and five or more A* to Cs, including English and Maths, has increased by 8%.
The results come the year after Halton topped the national league tables for improvement.
Halton Council’s strategic director for children and young People, Gerald Meehan, praised students on this year’s ‘exceptional’ performance.
He said: “This year 71% of learners have achieved five or more grades A* to C and 49% of pupils achieving five or more grades A* to C including English and Maths.”
The 2007 result of 62% was an increase of 9% – the second largest single year-on-year percentage increase seen in Halton. Mr Meehan added: “The achievements of our young people is fantastic and I can only say to all of them – congratulations on what you have achieved this year.
“Behind the figures lie months of very hard work and many individual success stories.
“Halton is fortunate to benefit from positive working and true collaboration between schools and the authority. This is what helped us to achieve ‘excellent council’ status.”
