Improvement brings Knowsley off bottom of league table

KNOWSLEY’S secondary schools are still producing some of the worst GCSE results across the country.

Last year the authority was named as the worst performing in the UK but it has recorded a 3.2% improvement this year to lift it one place.

The number of students reaching the benchmark at 29.9% is still well below the national average and falls short of the government’s 30% target.

The number of students gaining A* to C grades at 57.4% also falls below the national and North West average.

But despite this, the exam results have improved for the 10th year running, and the pass rate at five A* to C has increased by 6% on last year.

Damian Allen, executive director of Children’s Services at Knowsley, said: “Driving up attainment levels has been a major focus for Knowsley and this year’s grades are proof the initiatives in place are really working. In partnership with all our secondary schools, programmes such as Firm Foundations have helped contribute to this year’s successful results, achievements which the new Centres for Learning will continue to drive forward.

“The real stars are the students for their hard work and commitment. Knowsley will continue to build on these improvements to ensure future success for all learners. This year’s achievements will provide a springboard for the effective transition from our current schools, to the seven new Centres for Learning.”
