THERE’S an environmental message at the heart of this year’s Wirral Food And Drink Festival. The theme of this year’s gourmet extravaganza is wasting less of our precious food resources – and reducing the amount send to landfill.
Love Food Hate Waste is sponsoring this year’s festival.
It will have its team of eco-foodies alongside the chef demonstration area, showing how people can really make a difference with their food shopping
Organiser Andrew Pimbley says: “We are absolutely delighted to have Love Food Hate Waste on board, because this is a campaign close to my own heart.
“We want people to think about the food they are eating, where it comes from and not let it go to waste.
“We want people to buy fresh, buy local and reduce waste.”
Love Food Hate Waste aims to raise awareness of the need to reduce food waste.
It shows how by doing some easy, practical, everyday things in the home, we can all waste less food, which will ultimately benefit our purses and the environment.
Jane Little-Smith, of Love Food Hate Waste, says: “We think it is really important to support local food and drink festivals like Wirral, because it raises awareness to people about the food they are purchasing, reducing their carbon footprint and getting them to think.”
At this year’s festival, there will also be an emphasis on growing your own.
As well as the well-loved chefs’ demonstration stage hosted by Brian Mellor, there will be the Dig A Little Deeper stage, where producers will give you the chance to find out the story behind the food.
There will also be a green boost for transport – Merseyrail has arranged for a shuttle bus to go back and forth from Spital station.
It will mean budding gourmets can shop in style and enjoy the beer tent and cocktail bar before travelling back by bus and train.
The Wirral Food And Drink Festival takes place on Sunday August 30 and Monday August 31 at Claremont Farm, near Spital.
Entry is £1 and under-fives go free.
