MARK LAWRENSON: Tim Cahill a natural in supporting the striker – if only he were English

WHERE England got it so badly wrong, Everton are getting it right.

Both teams played one striker on his own last week. England flopped out of Euro 2008, Everton hit Sunderland for seven.

The moral of the story is simple. Only play a certain system if you have the players to carry it off.

Hence, if only Tim Cahill was English!

He fits more perfectly into the 4-5-1 system than anyone I can think of and the way he seems to effortlessly get to the end of things proves what a natural he is in that position just behind the striker.

And when he gets into the area he is just a magnet to the ball.

And he epitomises just how much Everton are now able to play in different ways and shake the squad up.

Sunderland may have been hopeless but that sort of thrashing for one of Everton’s opponents has been coming for a while.
