EVERTON boss David Moyes declared that his team played well despite missing chances.
He said: “We missed chances but it was a great result in the end.
“They were very quick on the counter-attack, which makes you a bit wary - but overall we did the job.
“We’ve got a great spirit and the players keep going. We had to change things on the pitch tonight but it’s not all about the 11 who started here - it’s the whole group.”
The result makes sure Everton are still in European action for the first time since 1985 and Moyes added: “When you go back and look (at the 22-year absence) it’s a tragedy - but we are trying to put that right now.”
Zenit boss Dick Advocaat believed his team did not get what they deserved from tonight’s game, although he admitted he did not get a good view of the crucial 29th minute incident which saw Lombaerts sent off and cost his side a penalty.
Although Arteta blazed the spot-kick over the bar, Everton’s third penalty miss in the competition this season, Advocaat said: “I didn’t see it but the referee was very quick with his decision - but he was with all of them tonight.”
The former Rangers manager added: “We got three 100% chances and if you get an opportunity with 10 men you have to take it because you know that with one ball played into your box they (Everton) would probably score.”
