WELL the Yak was fed and the Yak produced the perfect hat-trick with a left foot, right foot and header combo. Tabloids up and down the country must’ve been scrambling with each other as to who could get first tabs on the predictable headline of the ‘Yak-Trick’.
I don’t think there’s an Evertonian out there who can honestly say they didn’t have doubts over whether Yakubu would work out to be Beattie Mark II. When you look at it now though, the Yak is simply doing what he has always done and scored goals. With eight goals in 10 league starts, it seems inevitable that Yak will get the most goals in a season by an Everton player since the Premier League began.
In seasons gone by, a 3-0 home win with a player grabbing a hat-trick would have been cause to record every clip on TV and buy every newspaper to bask in the glory of such a feat. These days, however, and at the risk of sounding complacent, the achievement on Saturday of battering a team below us didn’t exactly bring euphoria among Evertonians. It’s a sign of how well Moyes has done and the confidence among players and fans alike, that this result is almost becoming simply what is expected.
Earlier in the season, we were often branded a one-man team with us being totally reliant on Arteta. However, I think it’s significant that Arteta has actually been rather off-form in the past few games. In his place, the likes of Pienaar, Cahill and Osman have come to the fore.
The only reservation for the season ahead is what will happen if we get injuries in midfield. We’re covered up front and at the back, but as the games stack up we could get caught short in the middle.
Our most exciting season in years continues to gather pace!
