YET again Everton and their fans have come away from Anfield with a deflated feeling and talk of what might have been.
The brutal truth was that Everton never looked like threatening Liverpool’s goal as the players struggled to conjure up anything like creative football.
Too many of Everton’s big players put in a poor performance, with Arteta and Lescott putting in their worst displays of the season.
Yakubu did not make himself enough of a nuisance against the Liverpool defence as he has done against other sides in recent months.
Neville’s performance was blunt as usual and Pienaar failed to have any influence on the game.
There were few positive points for Evertonians from the game, but one was the performace of Baines.
Surely Moyes will see fit to give Baines a run in the side now, and possibly move Lescott back into the centre of defence.
So far this has been a season of progress, and we still need to grind out a few more results to ensure we qualify for Europe again.
But if that progress is to continue in the next few years then yesterday’s derby revealed the areas where Everton must invest and quickly.
This summer will be a vital one for Moyes and Everton, but it seems that has been said every year since the Scot’s arrival.
The fans are desperate for success and feel we are edging closer, but let’s just hope the money-men at Goodison feel the same.
