Whether you're partial to a pale blonde or have a weakness for ripe, sparkling strawberry, Christmas wouldn't be Christmas without some effervescent style in the shape of prosecco, Cava, New World, cremant and – for stand-out status – Champagne.
For a taste of la dolce vita, prosecco is fast becoming top of the pops for reasonably-priced frothy bubbles. Try Zardetto Prosecco Spumante (£9.99, Marks & Spencer) from the highly-regarded Conegliano region for a delicate Italian fizz.
Cava is probably the closest sparkler to Champagne. To savour the best of the Spanish grape varieties, be guided by price and stay clear of anything under a fiver. For a deliciously full-bodied and elegant glass, try Castillo Perelada Cava Brut Reserva (£7.49, Waitrose) with hints of caramel, nuts and spice.
Pop the cork on some stylish bottles from Down Under, and you won't be disappointed. The consistent quality and easy-drinking mode makes Aussie fizz a great choice for friends and families
Try the Blanc De Blancs (£9.99, Sainsbury's, Morrisons) with zesty lemon flavours and a fresh finish that's enjoyable with or without finger food.
If you are going the whole hog and choosing Champers, then Canard-Duchene Brut NV (£26.99 reduced to £16.99 at Majestic) is a fabulous buy. It has everything you look for in a Champagne with a clean, easy style made from Pinot Noir, Pinot Meunier and Chardonnay grapes to give it great balance, a creamy texture and lovely nose.
For a classy pink that shines, try Taittinger Rose NV Champagne (£42.50, Sainsbury's, Waitrose). With the scent of wild strawberries and cherry fruits, it has all the finesse you would expect from one of the bigger Champagne houses that's still privately owned and produces prestige cuvee.
However, if it’s a present for the host, then Nicolas Feuillatte has the perfect plonk: Siberian Dreams Blanc de Blancs 2000 vintage (£28, John Lewis nationwide).
Made from 100% Chardonnay, it's fresh and ripe with citrus fruits and it also looks rather fabulous.
