Shacklady and Waring make Open

TWO players from the region, David Shacklady and Paul Waring, qualified for The Open yesterday

Ormskirk’s Shacklady hit a course record nine under par 62 at Montrose yesterday to qualify for the 136th Open Championship starting at Carnoustie a week tomorrow.

Shacklady’s amazing performance included seven birdies and an eagle and ensured he tied for first place on 133 with Australian Matthew Zions.

The 40-year-old from Mossock Hall, who has won more than 200 North Region events and holds nine other course records, had a two round total of 133 after his 71 on Monday and was understandably delighted with his morning’s work.

“I played really well and I think that’s my best ever round,” said Shacklady. “I had a 63, which was nine under, in a North Region Pro-Am in Portugal in February this year.

“I’ve had back trouble recently so I’ve been going to an osteopath in Southport, which has helped a lot.”

Amateur Waring of Bromborough, playing at Monifieth, shot 135 to finish joint second alongside Southerndown’s Llewellyn Matthews.
