Waring in the groove but England left in fourth

BROMBOROUGH’S Paul Waring warmed up for his successful qualifying campaign in the Open Championship by helping England lead the qualifiers for the match-play stages of the European Men’s Team Championships at Western Gailes in Ayrshire.

England, defending the title they won at Hillside two years ago, went on to beat Denmark in the quarter-finals. However they were edged out 4-3 by eventual champions Ireland in the semi-finals and then lost the play-off against Scotland by the same margin to finish fourth overall. Waring recorded successive 68s while in the second round his Cheshire colleague David Horsey trimmed the course record with a superb 66, which was bettered later.

The record, which had stood since 1986, saw Horsey fire an eagle and three birdies in his faultless 66 before Ireland’s Jonathan Caldwell returned a sensational 65.
