Walmsley win

TORRENTIAL rain reduced the Wilpshire Trophy in the Mitsushiba Northern Order of Merit to one round as Stephen Walmsley claimed the top prize with a level par 69 after a three-way countback.

The one handicapper from Birchwood could even afford to bogey the last hole as the verdict went his way, although birdies at the 13th and 14th followed by three successive pars helped his cause.

Manchester Hopwood’s Andrew Terry took second spot as Garry Lacy, a former Lancashire stalwart, settled for third place.

Meanwhile, the Acorn Trophy at Accrington the following day was called off because of the adverse weather.

The Lancashire club is now considering rescheduling the event for the end of the season.

DETAILS: 69 Stephen Walmsley (Birchwood), Andrew Terry (Manchester), Garry Lacy (Ashton-in-Makerfield); 70 Christian Sears (Lostwithiel), Craig Fort (Nelson); 71 Matthew Cox (Royal Birkdale), Nathan Dunn (Clitheroe), Jonathan Whalley (Haydock Park); 72 Clive Robertson (Green Howarth), Peter Finch (Hindley Hall), Sean Nicholls (Shaw Hill), Michael Hearn (Chorley).
