Captain’s role at Hall suits Joyce

GOLFERS will offer different reasons for starting to play the game, but the appeal of golf clothing seems unlikely to be among those at the top of the list.

But Joyce Dean, the new lady captain at Formby Hall, says: “I was on holiday with my husband in Villamoura, Portugal. I had not played golf before and I came across this fabulous shop. I looked around and I liked the ladies’ clothes. I got talking to the professional and he said ‘you have quite a good swing.’

“I have never left golf alone since that time. I have been very keen since. It was the clothes that kicked me off.”

A few months later she went to Spain on a golf tuition course and her interest in golf revived that of her husband. Peter Dean had been assistant professional at West Lancashire for many years, but had not played for some years. Mrs Dean has now been playing golf for about seven years and her successes include a hole-in-one at Formby Hall’s second hole.

Also last year she and her husband, the sixth generation in a funeral business, won the club’s Demeva Cup and the Cam Trophy, both for the second year in succession.
