Jones caps super run with win in trophy

MIKE JONES of Upton-by-Chester, in top form with two firsts and a second in recent Liverpool Alliance events, won the Stan Barrow Memorial Trophy, named after a past Alliance president, at Childwall.

His round of 70 for 38 points put him one point ahead of Bromborough’s scratch amateur Rob Hearty.

Jason O’Brien of Widnes was third with 36 followed by two other scratch amateurs, Josh Sims from Caldy with 35 and Royal Liverpool’s Tom Boys with 34.

Mike Jones, with Upton amateur Peter Bostock, claimed top position in the pro-am with 41, keeping ahead of the regular partnership of Nick Sargent and Jack Wilkes from Eastham Lodge, despite a nett eagle from Wilkes for four points at the par-four 12th. The Eastham pair finished one point behind.

The Huyton partnership of Terry O’Hara and Ray Kenny won the am-am with 42 points, helped by Kenny’s net eagle on the par-five 10th.

Hearty, with his club partner Steve Stewart, returned 41 for second place.
