SCOTT FITZGERALD from Southport and Ainsdale topped the individual section of the Liverpool Alliance at his home club – yet further evidence of the quality of the players in the booming Alliance.
Fitzgerald is among the increasing number of low handicap amateurs who compete and, indeed, win against the professionals. Recent prize lists have included many single figure golfers, including those with a handicap of plus-one and plus- two.
After leading the pros by three strokes Fitzgerald simply and modestly said: “It is nice to beat the professionals.”
He is going to Florida soon for a month’s intensive practice in the sunshine.
His 38-point total includes four birdies and only two bogeys.
The chasing pack of professionals included Sandeep Grewal (Heswall), Matt Blackhurst (Eastham Lodge), Mike Jones (Upton-by-Chester) and Chris Sands, also from Heswall, who finished his round with five consecutive birdies.
The Eccleston Park partnership of Bryan Joelson-Mulhall and Bob Pettery won the pro-am with 42 points, one point clear of five pairs sharing second position.
Norman Halsall and Jim Smith from Caldy scored four points on two holes and three on seven others to finish with a 45-point total, four clear of their nearest challengers.
This week’s fixture sees the Alliance visit Eaton tomorrow while the final meeting of 2007 will take place at Hesketh for the Trevor Rushton Trophy.
The early fixtures in 2008 include the Alliance’s first visit to Ormskirk since 1930 on February 21.
The 2008 Alliance starts at Eastham Lodge on January 16.
