Captain’s role at Wallasey for Gill

Gill Lander, 2007-2008 lady golf captain at Wallasey

GILL LANDER, who began playing golf to spend more time with the men in her life, is the 2007-2008 lady captain at Wallasey.

She recalls that time by saying: “My husband John had joined and when my son and his wife came up from London to stay for a couple of days they wanted to play golf. So I thought the best way I could see them was to join too.”

She had a few lessons at night school at Ellesmere Port and was further encouraged to join Wallasey when, at a club New Year’s Eve social, she found she knew so many ladies.

She joined Wallasey in 1994 and has served on the ladies committee and as ladies treasurer.

Mrs Lander, who worked in the Engineers Department at Wallasey Council and later in finance for Wirral Council, teaches in the Worldwide Fitness League, formerly the Women’s League of Health and Beauty, and organises weekly keep-fit classes for ladies at Wallasey.

Her chosen charity for her year of office is linked to eye tumours and follows her own experience in losing the sight of an eye through cancer in the mid-1990s.

Her fund-raising events will include a coffee morning, golf day and a lady captain’s bunker, where wayward shots will result in a cash penalty. Her golf handicap is 12 and she plays in the West Cheshire League team.

The club is holding a Junior Stableford Open over 18 holes on Friday, July 25. The mixed event is open to under-18s with an entry fee of £12.
