Hoylake success

ARAN WAINWRIGHT made the most of a late call-up to play in the Mansell Finishes Winter Series pro-am at Royal Liverpool – he won the top pro prize.

The 32-year-old Selby assistant was lying sixth on the reserve list and did not know he had squeezed into the 56-strong field until Monday night.

“I’m glad I got in,” he said after his six-under-par 66 over the windswept Hoylake links. He eagled the eighth to go with five birdies and one bogey to beat Leigh’s Andrew Baguley by three shots.

LEADING SCORES: 66 Aran Wainwright (Selby); 69 Andrew Baguley (Leigh); 70 Craig Corrigan (Haigh Hall), D Brunton (Ringway), Alan Crompton (Haigh Hall), Adrian Ambler (Walton Golf Centre); 71 Steve Parry (Astley DR), Darren Hopwood (Penwortham), Tim Maxwell (Knutsford).
