Golfer Martin Edge continues run of fine form

HESKETH’S young professional Martin Edge continue his run of fine form to win the Liverpool Alliance’s John Burton Trophy on a day of strong, cold winds at Hillside.

His 38 points total gave him a one-point win from Jason O’Brien of Widnes, with ex-professional Mike Jones, now back in the amateur game with a scratch handicap, in third place.

The trophy was presented to the Alliance in 1974 by Alliance president Freddie Veale following the death of the Alliance captain and Hillside professional John Burton.

Heswall collected the honours in the pro-am with two club partnerships in first and second place, Tom Atkinson and Gary Fawcett with 44 points followed by Sandeep Grewal with Jones with 43. Third place, with 41 points, was shared by Toby Spence and Tom Boys from Royal Liverpool and O’Brien and Graham Whitley, also from Widnes.

Two partnerships also shared first place in the am-am with 42, Chris Cartwright of West Lancashire with Tim Apel of Formby and Geoff Fallows and Bob Greaves from Southport and Ainsdale. The Huyton pairing of Terry O’Hara and Ray Kenny and Peter Davies with Richard Saul (Warrington) shared third position with 40.
