TIM MAXWELL has surged to a 245-point lead in the Mansell Finishes Winter Series Order of Merit going into the final fixture at West Lancs on April 3.
And he owes it all to his nearest rival Simon Edwards.
Maxwell, who has coached Sir Alex Ferguson and several United players, could not cure his own problems when his game went off the boil at the end of last season.
He sought advice from Clays Golf Centre professional Edwards, one of the most consistent players on the circuit, who literally put him straight.
“I did not know when the ball was going, my driving was all over the place,” said the Knutsford professional.
“We’ve had three sessions on the practice ground and I’d planned to see him again before the final Mansell event.
“But Simon is the only player who can beat me in the merit so it’s a bit cheeky!”
Maxwell has not been out of the top 10 in the five fixtures and two second places and a share of first prize last week with Welshman Lee Rooke at Hillside distanced him from PGA Cup player Edwards. But 400 points are at stake at Blundellsands so the merit race is not over yet.
