Weather-beaten clubhouse set to make way for new facility this year

WORK starts in May on a total refurbishment of the West Lancashire clubhouse.

New modern cladding will be built to replace the existing wood and the roof will be replaced as part of work which will last for nine months and cost £1.8m.

The clubhouse opened in 1962 and club chairman Tom Dickinson says: “While the inside was very well-designed and we can hold functions not possible at some golf clubs, the problem here is the exterior.

“If we were perhaps 20 miles inland I do not think there would have been a problem but on the coast we are at the mercy of the elements and the clubhouse has been battered by the weather for 50 years.

“The material used then has just not been able to stand the test of time.

“So we are getting a very big makeover.”

Most of the cost will be met by the members and Dickinson added: “We have had great backing for this project and we are grateful for the support we are getting from club members.”

The newly restored clubhouse will be ready for the Amateur and the British Girls next year.
