Season’s golf opener goes to Lancs

THE Rest of Lancashire won both the foursomes and the singles against the Southport and District Golf Association in the traditional early season match at Ormskirk.

Stephen Hindley (Ellesmere), with Paul McFerran (Childwall), scored the biggest win of the day, 6&5, while Chris Geraghty (St Annes Old Links) with Jack Senior (Heysham) and Ian Kenwright (Haydock Park) with Sean Nicholls (St Annes Old Links) also won for Lancashire.

Alan Harrison (Southport and Ainsdale) with Tommy Fleetwood (Formby Hall) and Greg McIlroy (Southport Old Links) with Paul Taylor Jnr (Royal Birkdale) won for Southport to restrict Lancashire to a one-point interval lead.

But Lancashire were too strong for Southport in the afternoon singles. Matthew Dixon (Ashton-under-Lyne), Michael Hunt (Pleasington), county captain Bob Bardsley (Denton), Nicholls, Hindle and McFerran all won for Lancashire.

Fleetwood, Richard Kilshaw (Chorley) and Stuart Taylor on his home course, all won for Southport but Lancashire ran out 11-7 winners overall.
