Golf: Stephanie Farrar sets out on Ladies Championship title defence

SANDIWAY’S Stephanie Farrar will be defending her title when the three-day Cheshire Ladies Championship starts on her home course today.

Farrar is also a member at Wallasey and won when the championship was held there last year to mark the Cheshire Ladies Centenary year and the first championship on the famous links in 1907.

Farrar will face a tough challenge from many of the county’s top ladies. The entry of 40 is higher than in 2007 and includes two former county champions, Liz Wilson from Stockport, winner in 1975, and Olivia Briggs of Delamere, the 2000 champion.

Like Farrar, Barbara Laird, the Cheshire Seniors champion and former Durham county champion, will have the advantage of playing on her home course. Other challengers include Charlottte Wild from Mere, winner of the Cheshire Girls championship, club colleague Gina Brown and Zoe Evans of Mere.

One well-known name missing is Natasha Podmore, formerly of High Legh, winner of the county championship three years in succession.

Podmore is on a golf scholarship in America but will be home in May which could be of interest to the county selectors.
