SANDEEP GREWAL and Rachel Goodall from Heswall have added their names to one of the most prestigious trophies of the Liverpool Alliance, The Nelson Cup.
The partnership returned 66 at Wirral Ladies to win the mixed greensome event and the trophy presented to the Alliance in 1935 by JC Taylor of the Hesketh to commemorate the services to the Alliance by its secretary R Nelson.
The trophy has many famous names, including the present Alliance captain Tony Coop among the Ryder Cup players from times past.
This year’s attendance, almost 100, was the highest for many years and after coming top from some excellent scores Grewal reported: “I had a great partner and whenever either of us made a mistake the other corrected it immediately.”
Alison Gray, the lady professional at Ormskirk, playing in her first Alliance event, together with seven-handicap David Rothwell from Shaw Hill claimed second place with 72.
In the subsidiary pro-am Nick Sargent and Margaret Barker from Eastham Lodge had a comfortable win with 62, six shots clear of the chasing pack sharing second place, Jim Payne and Linda Edge from Southport and Ainsdale, Robin Carroll from Prenton Driving Range with Monica Pinfold from Tytherington and the Heswall partnership of Tom Atkinson and Jane Carr. Oliver Carr of Heswall with Val Murray from Wirral Ladies won the subsidiary am-am with 66, five strokes ahead of John Marshall and Liz Marshall from Royal Liverpool.
SANDEEP GREWAL from Heswall returned a two under par 70 round, including four birdies, to win the individual section of the Liverpool Alliance at Hurlston Hall.
Grewal, starting a new session with the Europro Tour this week, finished one stroke ahead of Chris Crowder from West Lancashire and Robin Carroll from the Prenton Driving Range.
Scott Duffy and Dave Bayes from Aintree continued their recent excellent form to win the pro-am with 45 points. Duffy, playing with a slipped disc, handed in a card with four birdies while Bayes collected three points on five holes.
Three partnerships shared second place with 43, Nick Sargent and Ian Orme (Eastham Lodge), Chris Crowder (West Lancs) with Ray Carlson (Lee Park) and Andrew Matthews (Sutton Fields) with Luke Burrows (Birchwood).
Dave Dawrant with Gary Staniford (Eaton) won the am-am with 43.
Second place with 41 was shared by Dave Binsteed (Mossock Hall) with John Quane (Blundells Hill) and Dave Owens and Anthonie Lightfoot (Helsby).
BARRY TAYLOR from Houghwood returned a two-under par 68 round, which included five birdies, to win the Liverpool Alliance on its return to Ormskirk after a gap of almost 80 years.
Scratch amateur Matt Swede from Caldy tied in second place with John Fisher from Huyton and Prescot and new Alliance member Andrew Matthews from Sutton Fields Driving Range on 36 points.
Scott Duffy, with Dave Bayes of Aintree, won the pro-am with 44, one clear of Chris Crowder (West Lancs) with Ray Carlson (Lee Park) and the Hesketh partnership of Martin Edge and Will Sum.
Dave Cheyne (Mollington) and Sandy Taylor from Aldersey Edge won the am-am with 45 in a round which included two nett eagles for four points and three points on four other holes.
Matt and Danny Swede from Caldy finished second with 43, one point clear of Neil Reeves (Huyton and Prescot) with Danny Broadhead (Sherdley Park).
