Golf: Royal Birkdale reveals changes to course

The Open Championship comes to Royal Birkdale and a look at the 18th green

ROYAL BIRKDALE today unveiled its new look today as the build up to the 2008 Open gathered momentum.

Around 100 representatives of the UK media were at the famous Southport links this morning to hear details of the changes that have been made to ensure the course remains a tough challenge for the world’s best golfers.

The course has been lengthened overall since the Open was last at Birkdale in 1998.

New tees and new bunkers, under the stewardship of golf course architect Martin Hawtree, have been added to ensure the course remains in peak condition.

* THE opening two events in the 2008 Northern Order of Merit both produced local winners. John Carroll (Huyton and Prescot) took the Southport and Ainsdale Bowl while James Robinson (S&A) won the Formby Hare. Full report in next week’s Golfnorthwest.
